I’ll never forget the first small business I owned. It was the early 80’s and at the time, I thought I was invincible. I took over from my father and started running our small corner shop. And then, there was a massive explosion in the building next door and in one stroke of a pen, I lost everything. I was stupid – I didn’t have small business insurance.
Over and done with
My business was gone – and it turned out, my insurance wasn’t nearly adequate enough. Fast forward to today, and watching the London Riots this summer, and I was relieved that I had cover. I couldn’t imagine not having small business insurance adequate to cover my company and it’s needs – I couldn’t imagine starting from scratch again.
It’s been difficult to get to where I am now – the perspective we’ve got is that we had to learn the hard way, but we don’t want other people doing the same. It’s horrible realising that you don’t have insurance when you need it most, but what is worse is the idea that your insurance isn’t adequate. You might think it is, but it’s not always the case. So, the biggest thing I learned and continue to learn is to ensure that my small business insurance is reviewed before renewal. That way, I can be sure that I’ve got the right insurance for my business.
